Sandstorms in Dubai

During the summer season a low-pressure area develops above Dubai, forcing strong northwest winds to blow from Saudi Arabia. These winds, also known as Shamal (north) in Arabic, are quick and unpredictable when they reach Dubai. Shamal raises desert sand and reduces visibility and the sandstorm can last for several days.
